History Notes (6) ... About that puzzle.
We promised an explanation ... and here it is.
In History Notes (5) we noted that in the 1946/47 season the ETTA's administration costs were 1749, and that Tom Blunn had commented that this worked out at a little over a penny per month for each affiliated player.
We tried to use this information to estimate the post-war ETTA
membership, but we got an answer that we were sure was far to low and
we left it as a challenge to our readers to explain why. We had
calculated ...
Number of players = 1749 * 100 / 12 = 14,575 approximately.
But we realised, eventually (!), that in those days there were 240 (old)
pence in a pound. So the calculation should have been ... Number of
players = 1749 * 240 / 12 = 34,980 approximately.
This looks to be a more credible figure ... but still a long way short of the pre-war numbers!
